Hasakah, Syria – Subsequent to fierce battles with the radical group of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), the People’s Protection Units (YPG) regained control of several villages in the western countryside of Hasakah province, in northeastern Syria.

The YPG issued a statement, of which ARA News received a copy, saying that their forces “liberated the villages of Misherfa and Tel Ashra (13 km west of Hasakah)”.

At least seven IS militants were killed during clashes on Wednesday, according to military sources.

“The YPG units seized large deal of light and medium weapons along with two armored vehicles. They also retook the villages of al-Khanat and Amru (9 km west of Hasakah),” the YPG leadership said.

Since Friday, the YPG has intensified its military operations with support of the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes against IS extremists in order to control the western countryside of Hasakah and Mount Abdulaziz.

The Kurdish fighters were able to liberate the villages of Tel Majdal, Tel Ashra, Misherfa, al-Khanat and Amru.

In a related development, pro-Assad military source reported that units of the Syrian army, backed by tribal militias, gained control of al-Siddiq junction and Rafraf village (10 km west of Hasakah), in addition to the villages of Hawooz and Khazan in the western countryside of the province following days of clashes with IS militants.

Local activists from the city of Hasakah told ARA News that fierce clashes broke out between pro-regime forces and IS fighters near Rafraf village, which forced IS to withdraw from the the area, leaving behind three villages for the regime troops.
