Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) on Tuesday arrested 16 militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) south of Mosul city, in northwestern Iraq.

“These jihadists had infiltrated into areas recently captured by the Iraqi Security Forces,” the ISF said in a statement.

“16 ISIS members were arrested on Tuesday evening. Our forces will continue the search for other suspects,” it said.

According to the Iraqi central command, a number of Islamic State’s militants have taken advantage of the displacement movement from the ISIS-held areas in Mosul towards recently liberated areas.

“They came in as civilians, with the aim to conduct terror attacks against Iraqi headquarters,” the head of Nineveh media centre Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News.

The source added that the ISF have erected new security checkpoints in order to prevent further infiltration by ISIS into southern Mosul.
