Outgoing French president François Hollande on Tuesday met with the co-head of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) Salih Muslim to discuss the fight against terrorism.

The French president received Salih Muslim and Khaled Issa, the Rojava administrations representative in France, in the Élysée Palace.

The two sides discussed the ongoing Raqqa operation and the fight against terrorism.

Issa said that the PYD co-leader thanked the French president for his support for the struggle of Rojava, and hoped that the relations would continue for the benefit of both France and the Kurds in Syria.

“The French President expressed his great interest in the struggle of the Kurds against terrorism in order to consolidate democracy, brotherhood of peoples and human values and stressed his friendship with the Kurdish people. And that he will do everything he can to achieve peace in Rojava and Syria,” Issa told ANHA.

The French government developed good relations with the PYD and the People’s Protection Units (YPG) since the beginning of the fight in Kobani in 2014.

Furthermore, French Special Forces currently assist the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in their campaign to fight ISIS.

This is not the first high-profile Kurdish visit to the French president.

PYD co-Chair Asya Abdullah, Kurdish female commander Nesrin Abdullah, and Khaled Issa met with the former French President François Hollande on 8 February in the Élysée Palace.

The mandate of the outgoing Socialist president Hollande officially ends on the night of Sunday 14 May, after French president-elect Emmanuel Macron won the elections last week.
