Aldar Xelil, a senior official in the Kurdish Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM), said on Saturday that Turkey wants to prop up ISIS and that the Kurdish people will rebuff any attack on Afrin.
Last week, Turkish officials said that they wanted to “clear out Afrin from terrorists” and ‘free’ the border region, in reference to the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).
Senior Kurdish officials, however, have said that Turkey’s plan is to prevent the liberation of Raqqa and have called on the international community to prevent Turkish attacks on Northern Syria–Rojava.
“Turkey’s reckless behavior and attempts to carry out attacks against our people, particularly in Afrin, are aimed at preventing the death of the [ISIS] project,” Xelil reasoned. “[Ankara] aims to obstruct our efforts to expand the democratic project.”
The Kurdish representative lamented that “some international parties are cooperating with Turkey,” and said that their “their failure to prevent Turkey’s behavior is not in the interest of a national solution for Syria and the Syrian people.”
“Turkey’s aggressive actions aim to disrupt the efforts of the Syrian people to build their own free future,” Xelil continued. “International parties are called upon to intervene and to put pressure on Turkey.”
However, Xelil said that if the international community does not intercede to halt Turkey’s aggression, the local communities will resign themselves to resistance.
“Our people have adopted a peaceful approach to self-defense as a fundamental principle of their revolution,” Xelil concluded. “Continued acts of aggression by Turkey will force our people to choose resistance.”
